Mawjé (مَوْجَة) takes its name from the Arabic word for wave, a reference to the Mediterranean Sea and the coastal landscape of Lebanon. Its silhouette captures the movement of water through a series of soft, continuous curves, translating the familiar rhythm of waves into a solid, sculptural form.
A distinctive feature of Mawjé is the curved opening at its base. This deliberate negative space interrupts the solid volume, creating a contrast between mass and emptiness. Reminiscent of the hollow beneath a breaking wave, the opening brings visual lightness to the chair while emphasizing the fullness of the surrounding forms.
The wooden structure is developed to support the chair's sculptural geometry, with particular attention to the transitions between the rises and falls of the curvature. Layers of microcement are then applied and refined by hand, creating a continuous mineral surface with subtle variations in texture reveal the craftsmanship behind the piece.
Mawjé brings together a personal memory of place and the physical process of making.
